The other is good, he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. Moe Davis | Popular Opinion Didn't Support Him | He Deserves Blame For The Result
Let's face a fact: Moe Davis fucked up to lose to an unqualified candidate. I just want to get my thoughts down on the tactical errors while they're fresh. This is my lonely opinion regarding "the downside" of the candidate. Second Amendment. People called bullshit and they got it right. Western North Carolina will be a "Second Amendment Sanctuary" District if Virginia changes their gun regulations. People here are raised with guns and know gun laws. He was asked about his support for a ban on military assault rifles and give a "bright line" example of two closely related rifles (one that is a military assault rifle and one that is not). He said he "couldn't come up with an example" and most gun owners knew he was untrustworthy. People thought he had an idea in-mind and didn't want to show his cards in order to get elected. Attitude Problem. Moe Davis is arrogant as fuck. Ancestral Republicans (perhaps, Independents/Democrats) were acutely aware of his manners. People don't have a high tolerance for arrogance. Also, people in Buncombe county tolerated his behavior in order to get him elected but word travelled fast about his attitude. Each of the three debates reinforced the personality trait. Refusal To Apologize: Moe Davis should have apologized for his dumb ass tweets, deleted them, and moved on. He could reference the apology when repeatedly brought up by the media. Yet, he had a huge ego and chose the path to justify them, providing context for what happened during "that day" which most people didn't understand. We have to deal with Trump tweets and another layer of tweets is exhausting. Social Media. I have no confidence Moe Davis would commit to being a statesmen in social media. "Old dogs don't learn new tricks." To Slow To Change. The Catawba Indians will build a new casino and cut off the economy of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Chief Sneed talked about the issue with Moe Davis on a YouTube and emphasized the economic impact to Western North Carolina. The tribe's casino is the second largest employer after Mission Hospital. Moe Davis took two months to announce his position to oppose construction of the casino. Refusal To Address A Major Problem. NOBODY likes Blue Cross/Blue Shield North Carolina insurance. The insurance company reduced rates in the middle of the state because new health insurance competitors entered the market. To maintain profit, Blue Cross/Blue Shield North Carolina increased rates in Western North Carolina in 2018-2020. I talked to Moe Davis about this problem and he said it was not his priority. Pitch To Veterans. Instead, Moe Davis want to focus on Veteran healthcare. His vision was the healthcare was threatened by privatization. Then, he said the Asheville VA offered great healthcare. He was searching for a problem and veterans were not buying it. Outreach. Facebook Live and YouTube sessions are bullshit. The same people asked the same questions. WTF are we talking about the electoral college, again. Who the fuck cares about Moe Davis opinion? What I saw lacking: new People didn't receive a warm welcome, humor, better engagement, and any follow-up after the discussion. Come on: Moe Davis is sitting in a house! Use your phone, dude. I asked a question via Facebook and received the rudest response. Campaign Manager. I think Graeme McGuggicke lacked the skills to get him to the finish line. And, he didn't want any assistance. Moe wasn't willing to change. There were TONS of moments where I witnessed activities and was embarrassed. *** Less is more is necessary to be elected to high office. Second Amendment, Environment (Forests/Land Management), Broadband, Jobs (relevant to blue collar), Abortion (Supporting Families), and Healthcare Cost are the major issues for future candidates.
Hello, as a student at WashU taking a COVID-19 awareness class in Anthro 048, I am reaching out to mississippi to talk about Nativ American Healthcare on reservations in this state. It is quite a unique situation for those that live in Domestic Dependent Territories, the official name for the sovereign tribes that live on reservations in America. Even harder is how they are handling the Covid-19 outbreak. What more, American politicians thought they had this covered way back in 1976. According to Dr. Siobhan Wescott of Harvard Medical School and a Native American herself, a part of the Gerald Ford administration was focused on improving a treaty agrreemnt made a century ago in the times of Manifest Destiny. In the late 19th Century, when it was evident that Native American tribes would either be wiped out, or expelled to smaller and smaller territories, they set up a diplomatic treaty that afforded some Tribes sovereign agreement land, and what more, basic healthcare. This might surprise some because healthcare was not exactly what it is these days. But, it's important to remember that before mass colonization, the biggest killers of Indian Tribes were a disease. Smallpox killed hundreds of societies before conquerors could ever set foot on the land. Thus, it was in the best interest to provide a basic healthcare program so that medical aid could be provided to conserve the nations if the white man ever brought over more disease. (Source: https://www.ihs.gov/aboutihs/legislation/) Fast Forward to 1976 when Gerald Ford passed the Indian Health Care Improvement Act that was amended to Social Security to provide reimbursed Medicare services to all American Indians and Alaska Natives in the Indian Health Service and tribal healthcare needs (Source: https://www.medicaid.gov/medicaid/indian-health-medicaid/indian-health-care-improvement-act/index.html) Now, we are in the midst of one of the biggest outbreaks in modern history. Native Nations, like the Choctaw in Mississppi or the Cherokee a bit more north, containing the virus is quite hard due to how their infrastructure is. With limited local government or taxes, nations are unable to provide provisions to block this. More over, the hardest-hit nations like the Navajo cannot sufficiently close their borders because of public US interstates and roads. What more, the sovereign status of these lands that originally attracted low-sanctioned casinos and bars, do not have the means to shut down or provide practical guidelines for the pandemic. This economic pressure is what hurts a lot of the lower-class Native American Families. And if you're saying to yourself right now, this doesn't affect me because I'm not Navajo, think again: more than 40% of all tribes have casinos that support millions of jobs. Even in Mississippi. This is a warning if you think just because MS is letting off the brakes on some regulations doesn't mean it's time to hit Tunica Casinos and blow money and aerosols around. Tribes like the Choctaw have much higher rates of diabetes and obesity due to the low-price food industry creating an oligarcy in food around these lands. This is why Native Tribes have the 3rd highest per Capita death rate for COVID, up there with New York City and New Jersey beaches. (Source: https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/05/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-native-american-communities/) So, I reach out to you now, Mississippi, as one of the states that started the Trail of Tears, we show our hearts to the Choctaw and Native American tribes and be precautious and follow COVID-19 procedures.
Current state of affairs in Oklahoma gaming dispute roundup: Casinos are open for business
For those of you who haven't been following this bit of epic stupidity from governomoron Kevin Stitt, a while ago Stitt decided that the wording of gaming compact between Oklahoma and the tribes that operate casinos means that he can force the tribes to renegotiate if they want to keep operating beyond January 1st, 2020. Three nations, the Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw, filed suit to get a ruling clarifying the meaning of the language of the compact: https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/Article/Index/113934
Citing the uncertainty cast by Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt over tribal gaming operations, the Cherokee, Chickasaw and Choctaw nations filed a federal lawsuit on Dec. 31 seeking a judicial declaration that the gaming compact with the state renewed on Jan. 1. The nations provided a copy of the complaint to Stitt – named in his official capacity – along with a letter explaining reasons for the filing. Counsel for the nations, former U.S. Circuit Judge Robert Henry, provided a companion letter and copy of the complaint to Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter. The nations’ lawsuit asks the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma to declare the legal effect of the compact’s Part 15.B., which states: “This Compact shall have a term which will expire on January 1, 2020, and at that time, if organization licensees or others are authorized to conduct electronic gaming in any form other than pari-mutuel wagering on live horse racing pursuant to any governmental action of the state or court order following the effective date of this Compact, the Compact shall automatically renew for successive additional fifteen-year terms.”
Weeks before he said tribal casinos in Oklahoma would be operating illegally, Gov. Kevin Stitt hired a law firm with a reputation for aggressively representing states against tribal nations. “The legal experts at Perkins Coie have successfully represented other states in Indian law controversies, to include the State of New Mexico’s compact dispute in 2015,” Stitt said Friday when he announced the firm, which his office signed an agreement with on Dec. 18.
Happy New Year. To ring in the New Year Cherokee Nation First Lady January Hoskin and visited Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa. The clock struck midnight, I kissed my beautiful wife and then we celebrated the renewal of the gaming compact! Members of my administration, as well as Cherokee Nation Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner visited other Cherokee casinos to celebrate the strength of our nation as we enter 2020. #HappyNewYear #HappyCompactRenewal #UnitedForOklahoma
"It does indeed say this 15-year compact expires, but..." says former state Sen. Cal Hobson, that's not the end of the story, and he should know since he wrote the bill. "It was the hardest bill I ever authored by far, nothing's close," he said. It was a legislative marathon, assembling a behemoth bill encompassing gaming, horse racing, and 39 tribes over a period of 24 months. "Anybody that's been through the hell of doing this for two years, nobody wanted to re-enter this discussion lightly, and that’s why these words are in the compact," he said. Words, he says, with the specific intent of keeping the compact alive, despite the Governor's assertion that it doesn't. "I’m here to tell you, no contract auto-renews in perpetuity," said Stitt. "So, it does automatically renew?" we asked Hobson. "Yes," he said. "Even if there’s no immediate agreement on what the rates should be?" we asked. "Yes, that’s correct," he said.
Rutger Bregman - Utopia for Realists. Summary Chapter 3: The End of Poverty
Chapter 3, The End of Poverty The opening of a new casino owned by Cherokee Indians in North Carolina in 1997 provided a great research data of the effects of poverty reduction. The research showed staggering reductions in behavioural problems, crime, and the use of drugs and alcohol. School performance improved significantly, as did mental health. It was concluded that "the stress of poverty puts people genetically predisposed to develop and illness or disorder at an elevated risk. . . . Genes can't be undone. Poverty can" (p. 54). Why poor people do dumb things The perception of scarcity, the feeling that some resource is limited, has a measurable effect on the mind. It leads to improved problem solving in the short-term, but neglect of long-term issues. Continual feelings of scarcity take up 'mental bandwidth' that can't be used to make bigger-picture decisions. For a poor person, even the thought of "a major financial setback impaired their cognitive ability" (p. 58.). Research among seasonal farmers showed that this holds true even when the rich and poor test subjects are literally the same people. The cost of poverty The research with the previously mentioned casino found out that in the greater picture, "eliminating poverty actually generated more money than the total of all casino payments through reductions in crime, use of care facilities, and repetitions of school grades" (p.60). Other research reinforces the conclusion that eliminating poverty actually saves money. Research also shows that 'education programmes' for the poor cost far more than they actually benefit their audience. And on top of that, navigating the bureaucracy of the welfare system takes so much mental bandwidth that many deserving people never even get helped. The curse of inequality Scarcity has been proven to be a relative concept, which means that societies with greater inequality lead to a greater scarcity mindset. "Because it's all about relative poverty" (p. 65). GDP reflects the welfare of a nation only up to about $5000, above that inequality is a far more accurate marker for the rates of depression, drug abuse, obesity, etc. The "'psychosocial consequences' are such that people living in unequal societies spend more time worrying about how others see them" (p. 66). Even the rich are less happy in very unequal societies. Fighting poverty is good for our wallets "Poverty in not a lack of character, it's a lack of cash" (p. 69). As the Cherokee casino showed, a influx of money to the poor actually saves money elsewhere. Similarly, when Utah solved homelessness by giving the homeless free housing it actually saved the state money compared to simply 'managing' homelessness like before. Similar projects in several cities in the Netherlands saw the same result, until the financial crash of 2008 caused the numbers of homeless to skyrocket. Yet even then every euro invested more than doubled itself in savings elsewhere. "[I]n Europe, the number of vacant houses is double the number of homeless. In the U.S., there are five empty homes for each person without one". (p. 73). Homelessness should not be a partisan issue, because it can not only be solved, but it literally costs more money not to solve it.
